How sport and streetwear created culture?

Over the years, streetwear and sport have been intertwined. To the point, it has created a new culture in this generation.“Today, sports merchandise blends high fashion, streetwear, and personal expression.” According to clnsmedia, there are many factors that contribute to this culture. Sportswear is a popular way to show support for one’s sports teams. However, this new generation is promising to bring more personal feel to traditional sportswear. The goal is to support their respective teams, but also not lose their own identity through it. The streetwear’s mission is to not be afraid to be yourself. Throughout history, streetwear grew by the popularity of skateboarding and hip hop culture. Now, popularized by celebrities, typically athletes. It got people’s eyes by being comfortable but also stylish at the same time. “It was a blend of sub-cultures including hip-hop, skateboarding and surf culture with popular brands such as Vans, Stussy and Santa Cruz.” According to Skatehut, in the 1980s, which is when streetwear got popular, for them, streetwear was comfortable as well, but allowed them to showcase their love of music, art or sports influences. It also strives to build connections in the community, which is why streetwear and sports work well together. Streetwear was the common choice of clothing during that time. It was a time when people were not afraid of themselves, which alliance with the generation today. A generation that wants to highlight their uniqueness. Many people express their feelings of not liking streetwear becoming popularized, as it’s removing the identity of the style. As well, because of the popularity of streetwear, prices on those clothing items are becoming extremely expensive. People believe that the more it becomes popular, the more the meaning of streetwear gets lost. It comes more as a profit tactic than clothes that showcase expression.  Living in a generation that wants to be authentically themselves, streetwear gives them the platform to embrace their identity. This allows them to be creative through their fashion choices and create a culture where it’s cool to be yourself.
