Streetwear is blooming in the Gen Z generation, and why is that? Gen Z is a generation that is creative and thinks outside the box. Streetwear is an outlet to be able to put these ideas into practice. “They’re hyper-aware, socially engaged, and value-driven.” According to Dropout, Gen Z survives on being authentic, expression, and sustainability. Gen Z are more interested in thrifting and being creative with what they wear. They tend to DIY or challenge clothes to be something else than are intended to be. Streetwear is genderless, and anyone can rock it. It is an outlet of gender expression or freedom. Gen Z is a generation that grew up with the internet. We are constantly consumed by TikTok, Instagram and many more. The hype around streetwear is popularized through social media. It showcases storytelling more than just branding. When it comes to fashion, Gen Z is looking for brands that show representation, freedom, and overall community. Streetwear is also a form of rebellion, a challenge is social norms. Sneakers, one of the most talked-about products when talking about streetwear, are the products that a lot of Gen Z collect or sell. A lot of Gen Zs growing up collected shoes that were based on their favourite players. According to an article “Gen Z reshaping the Streetwear Sneaker Market”, 89.6 per cent of voters were similar to the word streetwear. Many were in the range of 14 to 26, which is classified as Gen Z. Streetwear brands like to make collections to make the products more exclusive. Which is more appealing to Gen Zs, as it makes them feel like we’re getting something one of a kind. Gen Z are not afraid to break fashion norms, and currently wants to create a world where fashion showcases identity and creativity. Streetwear is the canvas for that.
